During his meeting with President Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu claimed he is near securing countries willing to take in Palestinians who want to leave, while the UN denounces an ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people.

In a July 7, 2025 meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that he is “close” to finding countries willing to accept Palestinians seeking to leave their homeland. Netanyahu emphasized that “if people want to stay, they can stay,” but also insisted that those who want to leave “should be able to do so,” portraying Israel as a “place of freedom” rather than a “prison.”

This statement comes amid mounting international condemnation of Israel’s actions in Gaza, where the United Nations and multiple human rights organizations have documented severe humanitarian crises and accused Israel of perpetrating genocide.

The UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese presented a report to the Human Rights Council describing Gaza as “the scene of a crime” and one of the “most cruel genocides in modern history.”

Since October 2023, over 57,000 Palestinians have been killed, with more than 135,000 injured, figures that likely underestimate the true toll. The report highlights the dismantling of humanitarian aid, widespread destruction, and deliberate policies aimed at the displacement and elimination of Palestinians.

Other UN investigations have documented “acts of genocide” including targeted attacks on fertility centers and restrictions causing maternal deaths, as well as systematic violence against women and children. The humanitarian situation is dire, with severe shortages of water, food, and medical supplies pushing millions to the brink of death.

While Netanyahu speaks of freedom of choice for Palestinians, the reality is one of forced displacement, siege, and violence. The UN and independent commissions have repeatedly condemned Israeli policies as crimes against humanity, including ethnic cleansing and genocide. Palestinians in Gaza face relentless bombings, blockades, and deprivation that leave little room for genuine choice.

Netanyahu’s assertion of “finding countries” to resettle Palestinians echoes historical attempts to erase Palestinian presence and rights, a position widely rejected by international law and human rights advocates.

Adding to the controversy, Netanyahu formally nominated President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize during this visit. Given the recent escalation of violence, the siege of Gaza, and the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe, this nomination appears less a recognition of peace efforts and more a cynical political gesture. For many observers and victims of the conflict, the nomination reads as a bitter irony,or even a cruel joke, highlighting the dissonance between rhetoric and reality.

The meeting between Trump and Netanyahu also underscored the deepening U.S.-Israeli alliance, with Trump praising their “tremendous success” during the recent 12-day conflict involving Iran and Israel. Washington continues to mediate ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas, while simultaneously supporting Israeli military actions widely condemned as disproportionate and illegal.

This situation demands international solidarity with the Palestinian people and a firm rejection of imperialist complicity in occupation and genocide. Genuine peace requires ending the siege, respecting Palestinian self-determination, and holding perpetrators accountable, not relocating victims or legitimizing violence.

Netanyahu’s claim of “finding countries” for Palestinians starkly contrasts with the overwhelming evidence of ongoing genocide and human suffering documented by the United Nations. The ill-timed Nobel nomination of Trump further exposes the cynical political theater behind these statements. The international community must prioritize justice and human rights over political rhetoric and imperialist agendas.
